We are hugely saddened to report that our ex-Chairman, Rodney Burbeck, has died after a long period of illness.

Rodney had been suffering with Parkinson’s Disease for some years. His health deteriorated after a heart attack last summer and he died peacefully in his sleep in Kingston Hospital, South-West London, on Thursday, 30th August 2018, aged 78.

He had developed pneumonia. He was very ill for those last few days, but not in pain. He slipped away peacefully.

A good man, very capable with words; great with wit and dry humour; loved irony – and good punctuation.

Former editor of Publishing News, Rodney joined Publishing News in 1986 and worked on the paper until its closure in 2008. He was editor from 1999 to 2003. His happy association with The Galley Club started when he contacted us for a piece on the 75th Anniversary of the club. Ironically, it is now 85 years since our foundation in 1933.

Rodney had moved into book industry journalism after a successful career in the music business, starting in public relations with CBS Records and ending up as editor of Music Week. He also worked for the Daily Sketch on Fleet Street, which is where he met the founder of Publishing News, Fred Newman.

Rodney’s funeral was on Wednesday, 12 September at Mortlake Crematorium, Kew Meadow Path, Townmead Road, Richmond TW9 4EN.

The below announcement was in The Times, 5 September 2018.

Rodney Burbeck is survived by his wife Frances and son Daniel. If desired, donations to Parkinson’s UK -
